The
Wave
My nostrils embrace the salty air, each breath, a serving of
healing.
That clear away
long lingering allergies,
I reach toward sky,
And the hot summer sun, a generous lover, sends kisses all
over my body.
And the high shrills of seagulls fill the air, cluttering
around a piece of trash.
And my skin itches for the soothing water, and my body
craves the rush.
And the sand massages my feet as I walk towards her,
And off comes the strap, my blue and tan surfboard is
unhooked.
Wax, wax, wax, lustering the wax into the board, inhaling
coconut aroma as I go.
And my Rasta colored leash grips my leg, tugging at my
stubborn little hairs.
And then I reach the edge, where water and sand meet.
And I yelp and charge the oncoming surf, like a stampede of
buffalo.
And I swim past where the remnants of waves lay, further
into her arms, under the orange buoys.
Finally I am here, at the edge, the special spot where we
meet, before she breaks towards land, and after she has grown enough to be
beautiful,
I patiently wait on my board, letting a couple of them pass
by me.
And then I see her, swaying gracefully towards me.
And her beauty only grows as she approaches,
And I break my trance with her and turn towards shore,
And my board turns, and all of my energy goes to my arms,
Digging furiously in the water, propelling myself forward,
And her sheer force is almost too much as I struggle to keep
my forward motion.
She reaches for me and I jolt onto my two feet.
I become one with the wave, one with her.
What happens when your riding the wave
Our majestic dance is cut short as she hurls me aside.
Into the unforgiving water below, my world is cast upside
down.
I taste the bitter sand of the ocean floor, and the muffled peacefulness of the
space below water,
Losing control of my body as my arms flail.
Abrupt ending
The hurt runs deep, until I
notice another beauty coming my way.
